A Short Guide To Collectable Stuffed Animals
by L K Reid in 12.04.2009 00:46
They are in high demand by collectors when available at fairs and auctions, namely stuffed bears.
The story begins in the German town of Giengen an der Brenz in 1880.
Margarete Steiff made toy animals from her own designs as a hobby, she was wheelchair bound at the time.
She created mostly cats, pigs, elephants and dogs.
The company, as we know it today, began when Margarete's nephew Richard Steiff invented the first bear with jointed limbs in 1902.
The bear quickly became popular in the United States and then, across the world, winning the first prize at the World Exhibition in St.Louis in 1904.
It was later named after President Teddy Roosevelt and became known as the teddy bear.
With their stuffed animals still produced today in the town of Giengen, the Steiff company is known for their high quality animals.
Giengen is a mecca for admirers of the products as there is an Adventure Museum as well as the factory.
By visiting the Adventure museum, you can learn about the history of Steiff creations and visit a great gift shop that features the latest bears along with reproductions of classic bears, browse through historic catalogues and view fantastic creations made from porcelain.
The Classic range by Steiff is considered the top of the line, featuring Steiff stuffed animals that are hand made.
Some designs date back to teddy bears from 1906, 1909 and 1920.
You can even see the special Valentine Bear, with a stiched on heart. It is a wonderful and romantic gift idea.
The range also includes characters from the Beatrix Potter stories, including Peter Rabbit and the Mrs. Tiggy Winkle hedgehog.
Another children's favorite is available in Paddington Bear, with his trademark blue hat and red duffle coat.
Steiff Baby animals are designed with babies and toddlers in mind.
Crafted from high quality, durable materials, the collection includes kittens, puppies and lambs.
The Cosy Animal selections by Steiff are machine washable. Other products in the line include clothing, bags, keyrings and gift sets made especially for children.
Another great collection is the Steiff Limited Edition selection that showcases a pink and grey replica of the world famous 1908 teddy bear.
You can also find a Moon Bear, a Grizzly Bear and a cute Pierrot Bear in the selection.
Another one of my favorites in this range is the famous character from story books, the Rubert Bear.
Although there is a wide variety of animals available, the Steiff company will be forever remembered for the teddy bear.
