Why You Should Join A Local Astronomy Club
by Keith Driscoll in 20.08.2009 07:29

Joining an astronomy club offers you a lot of clear benefits for the amateur (or experienced astronomer. Although it is human nature to be solitary, you will discover a great many benefits if you join a local group or society. This might not always be an easy task for certain people as it does depend where you live.

When we all take a truthful look back at ourselves, we ought to promptly notice that we are not all perfect and typically being about others with a related interest has a helpful effect on our learning and experience. Another benefit is producing friendships.

Let us have a peek at a lot of benefits to joining a local astronomy club.

The first worthy point is access to better observing locations. This is a product of the networking function of the society you join - as a group they have the capability to scout a very big area of viable observing areas. If the membership is a nice size, I bet that there will be a lot of splendid places the members go to on a regular basis that you may not have known existed. Maybe a member has a member of the family that owns a fruit farm within a brief drive. Not only can you discover good observations locations, you may even get a nice warm mug of coffee or tea!

The second point is being among veteran astronomers. There is little argument that when you are about other like-minded folk that are more knowledgeable than you, you're own skills will increase. This belief is mostly true for most human accomplishments, whether bringing up kids, taking part in sports, or looking for a planet. To get the most out of this though, you must be teachable and humble. Acknowledge that you do not know every single thing their is to know regarding astronomy and be willing to take constructive comment, no matter how it is presented to you. Some folk can be irritable and rude and even their advice can be offensively given out, but do yourself a favor and stay polite.

The third point is having access to other people's telescopes. Believe it or not, the average amateur astronomer typically has more than one telescope. A few are die-hard fans of one brand or another; Vixen, Meade, Celestron, Zhumell, and others, they all have their loyal followers. If you are in the looking for your initial telescope, there is nothing more valuable than hands-on experience with a lot of diverse brands and models presented by interested parties that will give you skilled advice and recommendations.

So joining an astronomy clud has a lot of benefits for the new or skilled astronomer. My own adivice is to visit a number of assorted clubs if you have access to them before you settle on the membership in any single club. Make sure the club you select has like-minded members. If you are already a hard-core stargazer, look for one that is committed to observing the skies on a regular basis. I know you will be be the better astronomer for it.
