Sunderland The North East Giants
by John Andrew Collins in 18.02.2010 02:52
Last year Sunderland was only able to grasp four points from the top four in the league thanks to two draws against Arsenal. They will have to play better against the top teams if they hope to take the next step. One of their most memorable moments last year was their 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Newcastle United and they would love to do that again.
The team made a few splashes in the transfer market and the biggest one was the addition of Darren Bent. They also brought in Fraizer Campbell, Lorik Cana and Paulo Da Silva. Bent will be relied upon to bring a lot of firepower to the pitch and replace the loss of players like Greg Halford and Michael Chopra.
Overall Sunderland's goal this year is a mid table finish, and one where they don't have to fight for survival in the last few matches. Steve Bruce hopes to lead his team to relative safety early on so that Sunderland live football matches can focus on moving up, rather than always looking behind.
A top 10 finish is possible this year and would be a huge step for the squad. Their have been a few hints of what the team is capable especially after back to back 7th place finishes years ago. If they can mesh together and follow Bruce's lead this could be a defining year.
