The Benefits of a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
by Dave in 22.08.2010 12:26

Improperly inflated tires are a safety hazard. By employing a Tire Pressure Monitoring System across a fleet of vehicles not only will safety be improved but substantial cost savings can also be achieved.

Improperly inflated tires are a safety hazard!

• Tires are the second most likely cause or contributor to vehicle accidents, accounting for 20.9% of all accidents.

• Tire debris (gators) thrown from vehicles can endanger other vehicles.

• Improperly inflated tires compromise vehicle handling, stability and braking performance, particularly in adverse conditions.

By installing a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, drivers can be aware of improper inflation in real time. Attach the system to a Fleet Tracking System and fleet operators/owners can monitor tire pressure even if the driver is not paying attention.

Many benefits are derived from installing a Tire Pressure Management system to vehicles in your fleet not least of which is increased fuel efficiency. Statistics show that each 10psi of under inflation (per tire) causes a fuel economy drop of 0.5%. This leads to an aggregate of 0.514% increase in fuel use due to low tire pressure, per tractor- trailer combination. In other words, under inflated tires waste over 5.4 million gallons of fuel everyday (over 2 billion gallons each year) in the U.S. alone.

By monitoring and maintaining good tire pressure not only leads to reduced fuel costs but also reduces carbon emissions as a direct result of the reduction in fuel consumption.

Under inflation also increases tread wear. A “rule of thumb” is: Just 10% under inflation will reduce tire life by 11%. 30% under inflation will reduce tire life by 40%. Another “rule of thumb” demonstrates that tire wear increases by 30% when inflation is 20psi under target. It is not hard to understand that monitoring the tire pressure across a fleet of vehicles makes good sense and can lead to huge savings.

Maintaining constant good tire pressure will also lead to decreased maintenance costs, less roadside downtime, reduced damage to casings, better vehicle road handling with enhanced stability and braking and hence improved safety. This in turn can result in reduced insurance costs, less vehicle damage and fewer liability problems.

PR Fleet Tracking has researched and worked with many varied GPS Tracking Fleet Management Systems in order to evolve to what we believe to be the optimum, state-of-the-art solution for managing vehicle fleets available today. Our evaluation not only takes into consideration the performance and reliability of the technology incorporated but also factors in the associated costs. Consequently, we can be confident that, at any given point in time, we are offering our clients not only the most effective solution but also the best value for their money.
